Theme: The theme of this unit plan is centered around the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and it is geared toward a Kindergarten level. It aims to teach students about different things represented in the book such as the life cycle of a butterfly or the days of the week. It engages students in art experiences throughout each lesson by integrating dance, visual arts, theater and music into the curriculum. All of the activities pertain to the PA kindergarten standards and National Standards for Arts Education. They all fit into a standard kindergarten curriculum.
Integrating the arts into the classroom is an important learning experience for all children. By integrating music, dance, theater or visual arts, a child can use their creativity to learn and express themselves. All children learn in different ways and different contexts so it is important to include a variety of learning experiences so that your students can learn to the best of their ability. Also, art is extremely important in a kindergarten classroom because this is where the students are just beginning to learn to read and write. Many pictures students draw can reflect what they want to write or tell a story with even if they cannot write it clearly and it helps the students express their feelings and ideas.
