Lesson Background:
The students have been working on elements from The Very Hungry Caterpillar all week so by now they are very familiar with the story. This lesson aims to help the students learn their days of the week by using the story because the caterpillar eats or does something different every day of the week. In Kindergarten, children are just starting to learn their days of the week and the sequence that they go in on the calendar so this is a perfect activity to teach them while including elements from a good story.
Curriculum Standards:
This lesson relates to PA standard 8.1.K.A: Identify chronological sequence through days, weeks, months, and years (calendar time). It also relates to National Standard 1 for k-4 Music that states that children must be able to sing alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
Objectives:
- Students will be able to identify the days of the week using the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar
- Students will be able to learn and sing the days of week song together
Procedure (Learning Plan)
Rationale: Students in kindergarten need to learn their days of the week as well as practice them. By integrating music along with teaching the students the days of the week through a story that they like, it will help them learn the days of the week and what order they go in.
Materials:
- days of the week song in their journals, chart paper, days of the week cut outs, The Very Hungry Caterpillar book
Step by Step Procedure:
1. In a group, the teacher will ask the students what they remember about the days of the week from the book. This can show if the students can identify the names of the days of week and can maybe tell the teacher what order they go in based on what they remember from the story.
2. The teacher will read over the story again highlighting the days of the week when they are mentioned and asking the students to remember them.
3. After the teacher is done reading, they will write down the days of the week in order and model for the children how they look on the calendar while incorporating what the caterpillar did on those days as well.
4. The teacher will have 7 cut outs each with the days of week names on them. Students from the group will be called on to come up and place the days in order starting with Sunday.
5. The teacher will then play a days of the week song for the students and they will all sing a long to it. It will be pasted in their journals so that they can practice daily and follow along when it is time to sing.
